Volunteer Christa Hanson twists the tops off of a bunch of carrots.

The heart of Byrd Barr Place is our community. The volunteers who dedicate their time and talent to supporting our missions are our lifeblood. One such volunteer is Christa Hanson, who volunteers in The Market. Christa sat down with us to share what makes Byrd Barr Place special to her and her vision for a society that cares and loves like a family.

Tell us a bit about yourself and your background.

Originally, I am from Denmark, but I have been living happily in Seattle for 10 years. I am an educator, although I am now retired, and have time to volunteer in the community I live in. I am so happy Byrd Barr Place is in my neighborhood and that I can volunteer here.

How long have you volunteered at Byrd Barr Place and what are your primary responsibilities?

I have been volunteering with Byrd Barr Place for about a year and a half, since June 2023, and I volunteer in The Market. Normally, I come in Tuesday mornings and start to get The Market ready before we open at 11 am. I fill up shelves, organize produce, and welcome our guests, inviting them in to shop at our wonderful market.

What attracted you to volunteer with Byrd Barr Place?

Some years ago, my husband and I met an older man here in the community who had no family or friends. We took him into our family and cared for him, but unfortunately, he passed away last year. I wanted to continue doing more to help in the community, and a good friend of mine was volunteering at Byrd Barr Place and invited me to come in with them. That’s how I started volunteering here.

This year Byrd Barr Place celebrated 60 years. What’s your favorite part about the organization’s legacy?

My favorite part of Byrd Barr Place’s legacy is how they are always helping people with a smile. When people come in to do their shopping, we say, “Good morning, how’s your day?” We really welcome people. It’s a beautiful place with a really big heart.

What does an equitable future look like to you?

To me, it means that it doesn’t matter what race you are or what community you come from, we all need to help each other. We can all use a little help sometimes. I’d love to see the rest of the world be more like Byrd Barr Place, helping each other and being close to one another — always with a smile.

Do you have a favorite quote, mantra, or song that inspires you?

I love “We are Family” by Sister Sledge. I really feel so happy when people come in, do their shopping, and take good food home to their families.

It’s so beautiful being a part of this, and I really see us as one big family down here. I love it.
