Our Science Fair: Energy Conservation Matters
Byrd Barr Place Hosts First-Ever Science Fair Celebrating Black Innovation in Energy

Seattle, WA Byrd Barr Place is proud to announce its first-ever community science fair, Our Science Fair: Energy Conservation Matters, taking place on Saturday, February 28 from 12:00 PM to 4:00 PM at Byrd Barr Place, 722 18th Ave, Seattle, WA 98122.
Held in honor of the 100th year of Black History Month, this free, family friendly event will celebrate the pioneers, ancestors, and brilliant minds from the Black community who have shaped the fields of science, technology, and energy conservation. The event is designed to inspire young people to explore their passion for STEM while recognizing the powerful legacy of Black leadership in these industries.
Throughout the day, families will engage in interactive, hands-on experiments and educational displays inspired by notable innovators including Lewis Latimer, Annie Easley, David Crosthwait, Hazel O’Leary, Lonnie Johnson, and Jessica O. Matthews. Activities will reflect their groundbreaking contributions to electrical engineering, renewable energy, heating and cooling systems, public policy, battery innovation, and sustainable infrastructure.
In addition to science activities, attendees can enjoy:
• Free food for the whole family
• Resource tables featuring job opportunities and apprenticeship programs
• Information on summer youth programs
• Take-home experiments for children
• Opportunities for youth participants to win cash prizes
“Our Science Fair: Energy Conservation Matters is about more than experiments,” said Dr. Angela Griffin, Byrd Barr Place C.E.O. “It’s about ensuring young people see themselves reflected in science and energy innovation, as well as understand that they come from a legacy of brilliance that continues to power our future.”
Byrd Barr Place has long been committed to advancing equity, opportunity, and community stability across Washington State. This science fair expands that commitment by creating an accessible, celebratory space for learning, connection, and empowerment.
The event is free and open to the public. Families, students, educators, and community members are encouraged to attend.
